A long awaited evening - Liam and Hannah from The Rubbish Trip tried to run an evening at our church in 2021… but COVID. So on 3rd November 2022, we were excited to host this dynamic duo at Tawa Anglican Church.

What a great turnout! Around 40-50 people (both from our church and from the wider community) attended to hear about a huge variety of methods for living without a rubbish bin.

These two are real, genuine and they walk-the-talk on this rubbish-bin-free journey. Since 2015, as a couple, they have generated only 7.8kg of landfill waste and only 2 wheelie bins full of recycling, plus 8 crates of glass.

We heard in detail about the 6Rs waste hierarchy

  1. Refuse

  2. Replace

  3. Reduce

  4. Reuse

  5. Recycle

  6. Rot

Their engaging talk covered numerous aspects of living waste-free and was incredibly inspiring.

Some key points:

  • Take action in our own lives.

  • Get to know what’s in your bins.

  • Start easy with the low-hanging fruit first.

  • You don’t have to do this alone.

  • Apply the 6Rs.

  • Learn how to say no.

  • Join the re-use revolution.

  • Buy secondhand.

  • Grow, forage, share, and crop swap.

  • Rethink how we use the planet’s resources.

  • The linear economy is completely unsustainable.

  • Move away from a throw away society.

  • Live your values for your own wellbeing.

We would thoroughly recommend inviting ‘The Rubbish Trip’ to come and talk at your church. Even their tea and snacks were zero waste - they really do walk-the-talk.
