Installing a bike rack - a simple but impactful step

As part of their Eco Church journey, Cashmere Presbyterian Church in Christchurch have recently installed a bike rack at the front of their church.  It’s a simple but impactful step which they hope will encourage both church members and community groups who meet at the church to choose a transport option which is healthier for people and kinder to the environment. Cashmere Minister Rev Hamish Galloway says, “Cashmere is keen to take the responsibility of being an Eco Church seriously. We were challenged when a new couple arrived at church and asked where the bike rack was? We immediately got to work, installed a bike rack that is now used most days of the week and is encouraging others to bike.“

The church can see the potential for multiple benefits for installing the bike rack.  As well as encouraging the uptake of cycling as a way reduce of carbon emissions and traffic congestion, a bike rack is a simple addition that helps people save money and maximizes the use of church property - instead of dedicating large areas to parking lots, allocating space for a bike rack requires minimal space. Cashmere Presbyterian hopes that installing a bike rack will be a positive message about the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship. It’s a small thing to do but has the potential for big benefits!
